Oh wow it's been forever since an update! But the game is shaping up great so it's all worth it. This update has been a lot of content instead of big changes:
- Now all the tier 2 guns are functional. There is railgun that penetrates enemies, and shotgun that shoots many bullets at once. It is now possible (and expected) to merge guns in a playthrough.
- There is act 2. Game ends at start of act 3 now.
- There are now more gems, and you get them almost at every intersection gain.
- You get more of the "mini gems" that are: 50% power gem, 50% speed gem, 50% health gem, +2 armor gem, bomb gem, repair bomb gem, and potato gem (exchange for rewards later).
- "Big gems" are also reworked to give you crazy bonuses. Iron gem just gives you lots of damage but also more ammo use, makes repair drone repair a full cart (same as before), and doubles ammo in ammo cart. Fire gem makes all your damage fire, makes repair drone repair another place, makes ammo cart generate ammo on its own. Uranium gem makes you fire super fast but take damage, repair super fast but use ammo, and always perfect reloads but take damage. Explosive gem is still the same (gives explosion to bullets) and cannot apply to other carts (but I have plans for it)
- Components are back in. Gatlinificator makes guns gatling (and no effect on other carts but I have plans for it). Ancient Brain disables auto car actions but gives a big boost to everything. Lizard Brain boosts and "controls" the last cart you controlled. Deer Brain doubles big gem drops. Lizard Tail revives you once. Vampire Teeth halves your max health but actions and dealing damage restores health. There are also "mini" component armor, power, health, and speed (does the same as mini gems but applies to entire train).
- More unique gear for enemies: Previously there was repair cannon (repairs other enemies), gatling (lots of damage after spinning up), slow cannon (slows the train), and rocket launcher. Some of those weren't working properly but now all work. Now there is also a disabling gun (attaches to one cart to disable it 5 secs then wait 5 secs), and ammo shooter that will shoot off your ammo.
- There is also "special gear" that only the miniboss enemies get: left-right click switcher and screen horizontal flipper.
- The get a cart in the middle and get gems in the intersections are more polished.
- End city gives you a component and another cart. You can use one gem to merge gun carts or use 2 gems to upgrade a utility cart. And you can also exchange your potatoes. The start city have a building that lets you change your starting gun. The cart merging smithery now automatically detaches any gems on the carts its working on.
- Act 2 enemies have a chance to teleport when you shoot them. Also the drone enemy is back and can only be found in act 2.
- Many more misc bug fixes again. And you can now see all the camera controls all the time.
- There is now a Prologue that teaches how to play the game and acts as to answer a bit "why you are looping through time and trying to get to meteor". Will probably improve the story aspects later. You learn the controls and get carts during the tutorial then it ends with you dying to many enemies in the act 3 environment. It also shows how the act 2 looks and stuff.
- The terrain is now static and the train moves. This don't change anything gameplay-wise (well I had to do whole bunch of work to make it seamless) but this meant I could upgrade how the terrain looks! Now there is grass and pebbles on the floor. Also the terrain makes the game lag a lot less, and the draw distance is slightly better. Act 2 terrain have gems in addition to different looking trees.
- I did a color-value pass so now things pop a lot better from the background. Terrain also have new textures that look nicer.
- This update also comes with a LOT of performance improvements. I reduced the shadow distances and resolution (not too noticeable) and fixed couple other misc values. I reduced particle count across the board (my explosion assets all had like 200 particles each! now they have more like 20 without much loss in how they look). Trees now come with impostors which was another 20% performance boost. All in all the game runs at around ~120fps in a build on my semi-gamey pc and ~60fps on my steam deck. But with how crazy the new gems are the performance dips a LOT from time to time. I'll hopefully fix that next update.
- Best of all the game is still playable! Well at least I can play it without anything breaking but I really need to do some playtests soon.
